Materials List

  • 2 empty toilet paper rolls
  • Empty egg carton tray
  • White cotton filling
  • 1 long red pipe cleaner
  • 2 strips of red felt, each sized 2.3" x 0.6"
  • 1 pair of 5mm wiggle eyes
  • Small piece of leftover white paper
  • Acrylic paint in the following colors: true red, black, and flesh
  • Pilot silver marker pen
  • Black, brown, pink, red, and orange felt-tip pens
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Needle and red thread
  • Quick-drying craft glue (such as Bostik Clear)
  • Super glue

Instructions:

  1. Use the pencil to mark the facial area at the top of one toilet paper roll. Then, paint the rest of the roll around the face red and allow to dry.

  2. Paint the face with the flesh paint and allow to dry.

  3. To make the hat:
    a. From the second toilet paper roll, cut a 1.6" high tube.
    b. From the egg tray, cut an egg cup that is slightly bigger than the bottom of the shortened toilet roll and glue it to the bottom.
    c. Flatten the remainder of the toilet roll and cut a circle that would fit on the top of the shortened toilet roll and glue it in place.
    d. Allow to dry thoroughly.
    e. Paint the hat black and allow to dry.

  4. Use the black pen to add a belt around the nutcracker's body.

  5. To make the arms:
    a. Cut two pieces - each with a length of 2.3" - from the pipe cleaner.
    b. Take the first strip of red felt. Fold it in half so that the two long sides will be on top of one another. Stitch up the small opening and then stitch the sides together. Push one of the pieces of pipe cleaner into the sleeve before stitching up the last opening.
    c. Do the same with the second arm.
    d. Use the super glue to affix the arms to the sides of the toilet paper roll body.

  6. Use the black and silver pens to add some detail to the nutcracker's jacket.

  7. To make the face:
    a. Glue the wiggle eyes to the face.
    b. Draw a moustache with the brown pen.
    c. Use the pink pen to color his cheeks.
    d. Draw a red rectangle below the moustache for his mouth.
    e. Cut small teeth from the piece of white paper and glue it in place.

  8. Cut hair and a beard from the white cotton filling. Glue it in place and use the scissors to trim it neatly.

  9. Use the silver pen to add some detail to the hat and then glue it in place.

How festive is this nutcracker? No one will ever know that I used toilet paper rolls to make such an iconic holiday decoration. I bet I can fool a ton of people with this design. I know I will sure have a lot of fun reusing toilet and paper towel rolls this year.
